From the Big Bang
to Today
Scroll down to experience the amazing 13.8-billion-year journey of evolution, from the birth of the universe to modern human civilization.
The Big Bang
From an unimaginably tiny, dense and hot point, the entire universe expanded in an instant. Space, time and fundamental energy were created.
Stars & Galaxies
Gravity pulled clouds of hydrogen gas together and the first stars ignited. Along with them, billions of galaxies, including the Milky Way, came into being.
Earth & the First Life
Once a ball of fire, the Earth slowly cooled and oceans formed. In the ocean waters the first microscopic organisms (bacteria) appeared, and later complex aquatic life evolved.
Age of Dinosaurs & the Mass Extinction
Dinosaurs dominated the Earth, and some of them evolved into flying birds. About 66 million years ago a huge asteroid struck, and the large dinosaurs went extinct.
Human Civilization & the Future
Humans (Homo sapiens) evolved from small mammals that survived the dinosaur extinction. Through the use of fire, agriculture and the Industrial Revolution, we have arrived at a technological age in which we explore the universe.
